Montefiascone
Located about 600 meters above sea level, Montefiascone overlooks Lake Bolsena from above, offering breathtaking views over the Tuscia area of Viterbo. From the highest point in the town, the Pilgrim’s Tower of the Rocca dei Papi, you can enjoy a panorama that stretches across the lake, the Viterbo valley, and, on particularly clear days, even a glimpse of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The town is famous for its EST! EST!! EST!!! wine, one of the region’s finest products, tied to the well-known legend of the German bishop Johannes Defuk, who stopped here on his journey to Rome, captivated by the quality of the local wine.
During the summer, Montefiascone comes alive with numerous events connected to the Wine Fair and the Tuscia Wine Festivals, featuring tastings, shows, and cultural happenings such as the Est! Film Festival and the Baroque Festival. One of the most evocative highlights is the Historical Parade, with participants in medieval costumes reenacting the town’s history and traditions.
Among the must-see landmarks are the Cathedral of Saint Margaret, with one of the largest domes in Italy, the Rocca dei Papi, a former medieval papal residence, and the Basilica of San Flaviano, closely linked to the tradition of the famous local wine.
